The Art of Integration
By Angela Saini
Photographer Peter Sanders has tried to prove that British Islam is as British as it is Muslim in his latest work being shown at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green
Photographer Peter Sanders has shifted the focus of his work in the past thirty years from the music idols of the 1970s, to documenting the remnants of traditional Islamic societies.
His latest exhibition, called ‘The art of Integration’, subverts common perceptions of British Muslims. He said: "Islam isn't on the fringes of British society. Rather, it has become part of the very fabric of society."

He has photographed Muslim individuals in modern Britain, including writers, rock icons and a police constable.
He also examines the architectural influences of the Muslim world expressed in the Shah Jehan Mosque in Woking and a Turkish bath in the shadow of the Gherkin.
'The Art of Integration' exhibition will run until August 2007 at Rich Mix on Bethnal Green Road in East London.
