The Official Secrets Act

London's best kept secret?

Official Secrets Act

Describing themselves as "of the pop persuasion", they make no secret of the fact their influences include sound-a-likes The Libertines and the French Resistance in equal measure. So what don't you know about Official Secrets Act?

You might know that they're a north London trio. You might know that Tom, Lawrence and Alexander make up that trio.

What you might not know about Official Secrets Act is that they spent three months cutting their teeth on the unforgiving Yorkshire club circuit before heading back to London.

Having formed a year ago in Leeds, the band came together through a common knowledge of British military victories and defeats ... oh, and some musical interests, too.

With influences including Television (the band), radio (the medium) and Talking Heads, the trio make some lovely post-punk twangs infused with seriously frenetic rhythm.

cheap instruments

Most striking, though, is Thomas Charge Burke's distinct and diverse vocals, howling from the rafters one minute, then swinging effortlessly to the most gravelly and intimate.

born to run

They know who's The Boss

Our London Calling featured track, Snakes and Ladders, shows this off to considerable effect, in particular the song's finishing and memorable hook-line.

As well as sharing many a fond moment together on the road and exchanging cheap instruments in Lawrence's Leeds basement, Official Secrets Act have enjoyed some real highs, including an appearance on BBC Radio 2. The band name their live session for Janice Long as one of their best moments to date.

Back in London for the time being, the band are currently booking gigs for the coming summer season. Keep up to date with their forthcoming shows, as well as hearing more tracks at (see links, right).
