Notes from a fire investigator

David Townsend
David Townsend says farewell

It's goodbye from me...

After more than 30 years service London Fire Brigade fire investigator David Townsend has called it a day.

Tips and Advice

There are many people who are particularly vulnerable to fire: the elderly and alone, migrants, the mentally and physically disabled and hoarders. Victims of alcohol and drug abuse are also vulnerable.

Our fire safety messages are not seen by many of these people. We cannot reach them. But many of us know of such people as friends, family or neighbours.

Please help us to help them. Fit smoke detectors for them. They need it more than most. Your local Fire Station may be able to help. You only need to ask.

Did you know:

Death and injury from fire in the UK has been decreasing steadily now for many years and fire deaths are now at their lowest since 1959!

It is testament to the effective regulation, education, publicity and community safety work of your public services. That work will always continue.

David Townsend has been a fire fighter and Officer in the London Fire Brigade for more than thirty years.

Every day for the last ten years as an investigator he and his colleagues have been piecing together the circumstances of incidents ranging from the chaotic to the tragic.

He has presented just some of these cases here over the last few years. But at the end of October he retired.

David Townsend said: "Over the past thirty years I have fought, controlled, regulated and investigated fire. It has been a major part of my life and has brought me face to face with drama, humour, tragedy and danger.

"I have had the honour to work alongside a remarkable Brigade of caring and compassionate men and women in the greatest City in the world. A City that I have always been proud to call 'My London'.

"People often judge London too harshly and too quickly. I would urge those people to look deeper, look harder and look up! It is a beautiful City with a stunning history and the people are amazing

"I sincerely hope that over these years I have made a difference to some. I have certainly tried!"

Stay safe.
