28.02.08 BURNING RUBBER - BE A GP SUPERSTAR!

The fantasy of two fans can come true at The Lakeside Hammers Speedway official Press and Practice Day when they will get the chance to pit their driving skills against the fastest guys in town at the inaugural Hammers GP Kart Challenge.

After showing the gathered Press and Media their on-track skills, the entire Hammers Squad will swap their Kevlars for race overalls and attempt to prove they are just as fast on four wheels as two. Also determined to assert their seniority, several of the Club's promotional team will also take to the Kart track at Lakeside Karting.

Two places in this fantastic event are up for grabs. If you fancy yourself as a bit of boy (or girl) racer, and think you can show Swedish GP star Andreas Jonsson, club Captain Fantastic, Adam Shields, a clean set of wheels, or boss Hammer's favourite Leigh Lanham round the track, this is your chance.

With all proceeds going directly to the Hammers Support Team, which funds development for young riders, these two places will go in an Auction to the two highest bidding fans. This is a very special opportunity and with the knowledge that the victorious fans will be helping the Club support the next generation of Hammers Speedway riders.

One lucky fan will go directly into the 3 man team captained by Andreas Jonsson, with the other straight into Adam Shield's ultra competitive team.

To register your bid for this fantastic opportunity of racing against the Hammers riders you will need to visit the Club’s website at www.lakesidehammers.com and follow the link to the Auction. Bids will open at 3pm on Saturday 1st March and will close at midnight, Sunday, 9th March, with the lucky winners notified on Monday 10th. You will need to be free to compete on the afternoon of 11th March.

25.02.08 HURRY JOINS THE HAMMERS BACK ROOM TEAM

The Lakeside Hammers are delighted to announce that long serving Hammer Paul Hurry, who is enjoying his testimonial at the stadium later in the season, will be joining the Club's Management Team in the role of Academy Manager with the brief of finding and developing the Hammers of the future.

2008 Academy Manager: Paul Hurry

The Hammers Co Promoter Jon Cook explains: "Both Stuart and I are totally committed to the development of British riders in particular for the long term growth of the Club. We have already had great success with our first discovery, Jerran Hart, who will make a big impression on the Sport this year, but the running of an Elite League team often means the time needed cannot always be found, especially once the season has got into full swing.

“It’s fantastic to have Paul on board in this crucial position and we have given him a free hand in planning the direction we take. We are very excited with Paul's appointment and he will be the point of contact for all riders outside of the main team and will run all our extra heat races and Academy matches which will continue to run uniquely before the Elite match each week.

“Paul will be focusing on turning raw recruits into full time Hammers over a period of time and is already using his links in other forms of motorsport to entice skilled riders to have a look at Speedway as a serious career option. I believe he is a natural at teaching and think that he will go on to be of great value to our set up".
The Club are also looking into running a series of Conference style meetings later in the year to support Paul's activities.

New Academy Manager Paul Hurry commented: "It’s exciting to have been offered this position with the Club and I feel it’s a great way to start an off track career in the Sport, particularly as I am unable to ride this year. Jon (Cook) has outlined the budget available along with the aims of the Club and we will review the progress we have made at the end of the year.

“My hope is to encourage young and up and coming Speedway riders that Lakeside is the place to be and also to look at other motorcycle sports and encourage riders to have a go at Speedway. To this end we will be building up equipment for riders to use. We also have an Academy team to build and I will be inviting riders to the Club practise on the 7th March to run an eye over them.

“This appointment ties in brilliantly with my Testimonial year and plans are already going well for my meeting on Friday 18th July when we will have some of those riders back in action who have represented the Club at different times during the past 25 years. These are very exciting times at the Arena Essex Raceway and it’s great to be part of it all.”
