Family History Day

BBC London is holding a special day at the British Library to help you trace your family history

'We are sorry but all the entry tickets for the Family History Day have now all been allocated. Anyone who already has an entry ticket will be able to make bookings for lectures and workshops on Sunday 12th February. Tickets will be made available in the Conference Centre, one hour before the start of each event.'

Researching your family history has never been easier or more popular, with access to many records available on line.

But what if you reach a blockage in your ancestoral detective work?  Or if you've been inspired by the BBC2 series, Who Do You Think You Are?, but don't know how to start?

BBC London is coming to your aid with a special day designed just for Londoners who want to trace their personal heritage.

The BBC London Family History Day will take place at the British Library in Euston Road on Sunday 12th February.

All the activities on offer are free and we've designed a day, between 11am and 5pm, which caters for all ages.  But beware, we have limited places, so tickets must be booked in advance.

Call the British Library box office on  020 7412 7331 to secure your free tickets, which will be posted to you.

On Friday January 27 we will be announcing full details, here on the website, of more talks, workshops and discussions on February 12th.  Again, many of these events will be ticketed via the same box office number.  So watch out for details and make sure you secure a place by booking early.  Among the attractions on offer will be;

Lectures by experts.

Subjects covered will include how to get the most from the National Archives, from newspapers, maps, manuscripts and military archives.  Also suggestions for  researching African, Caribbean and Asian ancestors and how to conserve crucial documents and photographs.

Family history fair

An opportunity to see a range of London-based and specialist family history groups under one roof. A great way to pick up useful products, advice and build networks to pursue your family’s history. Booking not required.

Meet the experts

If you have specific questions, experts will be on hand to advise. Specialist advice will be available for tracing your Caribbean or Asian family history, using military records and using online resources. Booking not required.

Creative responses to family history research

A number of workshops will explore how to make the most of the inspiration your family history reseach unleashes.  There will also be the opportunity to see work by professional artists and poets, inspired by their own heritage.

Activities for children

Book-jacket designs on a family theme and story-telling about personal heritage.
Plus food, exhibitions and British Library bookshop.
