Thames Ironworks founded a club in 1895, to give recreation for the shipyard workers. The club entered the London League in 1896 and won the championship (1898). In 1899, having become professional, West Ham won the Southern League Second Division (London) and moved into Division One. On becoming a limited liability company the name was changed to West Ham United. Moved from the Memorial Ground to a pitch in the Upton Park area, known originally as 'The Castle', in 1904.
