Garry Christian of The Christians gives tips on musicianship.
Garry Christian had been performing for quite a few years before tasting Top 40 success in the 1980s with The Christians. He recalls early family influences and playing his first gigs with his brother in the inappropriately named Equal Temperament in 1974. But his first taste of performance came at the age of twelve, when he was persuaded to sing at a church event.
"I got a bug for being applauded. I liked it," said Christian.
Garry Christian is the lead singer and occasional songwriter with The Christians. See Garry Christian perform Born Again in our acoustic session video.
This video was shot by National Museums Liverpool as part of the Musicianship strand of The Beat Goes On exhibition, which charts sixty years of popular music in one of the world's most famous musical cities. The in-depth interviews explore themes such as local influences, career paths and performance. Watch more videos from How to be a Musician to build a picture of how scenes and careers can develop in a particular place at different times. The Beat Goes On is at the World Museum Liverpool until 1st November 2009.

I live across the ocean and I am just now "discovering" the 80's music of the Christians in the here and now. "Forgotten Town", "Words" and even their earliest accapella performances are among my audio treasures. Thank God for the Internet! I love this interview with Garry. It is so unpretentious and genuine. Great format.
