La Machine

A sneak preview of an animatronics project set to invade the streets of Liverpool.

How many of us can think of the Empire State Building without King Kong precariously swinging from its spire coming to mind? What Hollywood's most famous animated ape in the classic horror movie of 1933 did for New York's image, a French animatronics company is now hoping to do for Liverpool.

Sworn to secrecy

Nantes-based La Machine is a world leader in large-scale robotics. Its last project in Britain, The Sultan's Elephant, stopped London in its tracks in 2006. It has now been commissioned to produce what could be the most visually stunning and ambitious event of European Capital of Culture 2008.

But exactly what has been planned is the most closely guarded secret of the year.

However, a group of local journalists was invited to a secret location on Merseyside to see the preparations under the strict condition that they did not reveal the precise details of what they saw.

Believe the impossible

La Machine artistic director François Delarozière says "This three-day adventure will unfold against the landmarks of a great city, stopping the traffic and captivating everyone who sees it. Prepare to be amazed by a show that will make you believe in the impossible. It has the X-factor to change the way people see Liverpool for the rest of their lives."

And there will be video and live interactive coverage of La Machine. Get the latest update and find out how you can take part here at bbc.co.uk/liverpool08.

The sight of the creature towering down Lord Street with the musicians playing that creepy music behind her is one that I'll never forget. Amazing! C'est magnifique!

I think there is still going to be a giant Liverbird - I think the Spider is the 'red herring' think about it... A battle between the Liver Bird that saves the city from a rampaging spider - how amazing would that be... Just like when Statue of Liberty comes to life in Ghostbusters 2. We are not getting the whole story me thinks???

A Liver Bird would have been better. I know where it was built.

Only in Liverpool could this beast be idolised and probably be sanctified. La Machine will be bigger than the Beatles!

Its a spider, I would have thought a mechanical Liver Bird would be more appropriate...Just imagine the Mothers in liverpool now saying "come along kids, im gonna take you to see a huge spider"..? how many Kids are wanna go on the 18a from Kirby to see and potentially be eaten by a huge spider?
