Its
hard to know where to start to review this show because all of it
was so entertaining. This event, showcasing talent from the Positive
Impact training organisation and others such as Underground Sound
and Parklands Dance Group stunned me with its energy and sparkle.
It
managed to combine original songwriting produced by the young people,
covers of modern classic ballads with some jaw dropping voices and
delivery. I dont know who impressed me more; it could have
been Sian with her beautifully varied, effortless performance of
You Dont Know My Name; it could have been Butchs
strong, flawless delivery of Ghetto Soldiers; it could
have been Junior PI (enormous voices for such young people), I just
cant decide.
But
it was some of the creative links between pieces that shone out
for me. A short, almost-mimed sketch with a rich, reggae soundtrack
spoke out against police mistreatment, a very clever take on subtitled
movies with beatbox voice over was extremely well-observed and some
of the improvised, spur of the moment additions showed real imagination
and wit.
Of
course the heart throbs remain Mothi, Winston, Julian, Josh, Zain
and Wayne, but if I had to big up one all-round performer from last
night my money is on Zain. Funny, well-observed physical comedy,
an impressive range of accents, facial expressions and a strong
singing voice all rolled into one. If you werent lucky enough
to get seats for the show this time, make sure you get one next
time around; Zain and Winston as 2 blinging babes on the town made
me laugh till I cried.
Congratulations
to everyone that took part.
