Yellowman
was written in 2002 by American playwright Dael Orlandersmith and
has already become one of the most widely performed plays in the US.
Telling
the tale of Alma, a dark skinned African-American woman, and her
light skinned childhood friend, Eugene, Yellowman is set in 1960'
South Carolina celebrating love and the power of the human spirit.
Nominated
for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2002, Yellowman explores the
complexities of internal racism within the African-American community.
Hailed by the New York Times as " a landmark in theatre
history enthralling mind altering" a two hander Yellowman
will be performed by Cecilia Noble as Alma, and native Liverpudlian
Kevin Harvey as Eugene and directed by Indhu Rubasingham whose credits
include Romeo and Juliet at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
Dael
Orlandersmith has established a reputation for not shying away from
taboo or controversial subject matter; her previous plays include
Monster and Beauty's Daughter for which she won an OBIE award.
Yellowman
will run from April 16th to May 8th before transferring to the Hampstead
Theatre as part of a special collaboration.
