FACTS

At the top of the Liver Building sit the mythical Liver Birds. These were won in a competition by a German sculptor, Carl Bernard Bartels, who had settled in England at the turn of the century. However, all references to his achievements were removed in a fit of xenophobia at the outbreak of the first World War.

The Cunard Building is built in the style of an Italian palazzo. Decisions to build the great liners, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, were taken in the board room here.

Designed in 1907. the Port of Liverpool building is an impressive symmetrical structure in the style of a Renaissance palace with cupola topped towers at the corners, and in the centre a large classical drome, topping a high drum.

The final selection was unveiled on Wedesday, 14th August from a vista viewpoint at the Maritime Museum, which played host to invited press eager for a first glimpse of the options - one of which will become reality.

The schemes mix the traditional with the ultra modern and a new museum for the City is a key part of all the plans.

The developers and their partner architects are:

  • Capital and Provident/Chelsfield – Sir Richard Rogers
  • Neptune/Countryside Properties – Will Alsop
  • David McLean/Downing Developments – Edward Cullinan
  • Urban Splash – Sir Norman Foster

Speaking at the announcement of the shortlist for the next stage of the competition, Liverpool Vision Chair Sir Joe Dwyer said:

"When we launched this competition at the MIPIM Property Conference in Cannes in March we described the Fourth Grace site as a once in a lifetime opportunity to make an architectural statement on Liverpool’s waterfront that would be witnessed by the world."

"I am therefore delighted today to announce an impressive shortlist of four developers and partner architects who have shown they have the vision, skills and experience to do justice to this spectacular waterfront site."

The Fourth Grace will complement the existing Three Graces – the Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building.

The project to build a Fourth Grace results from a partnership between Liverpool Vision, Northwest Development Agency, National Museums & Galleries on Merseyside, Liverpool City Council and Culture Company, and former site owners the Robert Smith Group.

Liverpool Vision Chief Executive Jim Gill explained that the four short-listed parties will be invited to prepare more detailed design and development proposals, and that following a thorough commercial and technical analysis, including consideration of feedback from a public exhibition of the competing schemes, a preferred development partner and concept will be announced at the end of the year.

Mike Shields, Chief Executive of the Northwest Development Agency said:

"This is a fantastic opportunity for a development of international standing to complement and complete Liverpool’s famous waterfront, and with the standard of entries received I am confident we will achieve just that."

"The development will not only be a significant factor in Liverpool’s future but also to the region as a whole, making a considerable contribution to the region’s economy, creating jobs, boosting investment and encouraging visitors to England’s North West."
