On
Thursday 12th September, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, an artist participating
in the International 2002 will transform Liverpool city centre into
a giant open air interactive cinema with his latest project, Body
Movies.
Co-commissioned
by FACT, this spectacular interactive artwork features over 1,200
large-scale portraits - including some of people taken on the streets
of Liverpool - projected onto a 20m x 20m screen in Williamson Square.
Body
Movies will run from 12 to 22 September only, from 9.00pm 12.00am.
The artwork can only be viewed at night.
Body
Movies features portrait photographs of people from Liverpool, Rotterdam,
Madrid, Mexico City and Montreal. These portraits are projected
onto the 400m-square screen, but only appear when the shadows of
passers-by, which are recorded as they walk past, are projected
back onto the screen.
The
silhouettes they create which can be up to 20 metres high - reveal
the portraits hidden underneath. A complex technical artwork, Body
Movies incorporates database-driven technology that combines the
stored portrait images with the images of people walking by to create
a constantly changing display.
Mexican-Canadian
artist, Lozano-Hemmer has been commissioned by FACT, the Foundation
for Art & Creative Technology, and Liverpool Biennial 2002, to present
this work within Liverpool city centre.
FACT
is one of the major partners in the Liverpool Biennial, with Lozano-Hemmer's
work one of five projects commissioned and selected by FACT for
International 2002.
