Liverpool
is the only city in the UK to host a Biennial of contemporary visual
art.
The event will bring together artists from around the world in a
celebration of fresh, innovative and engaging practices in visual
culture.

Liverpool
Biennial 2002 is a 10-week festival from September 14th to November
24th, celebrating the world's most cutting edge contemporary visual
art.
The
only event of its kind in the UK, the 2002 programme will feature
250 artists exhibiting in galleries and public spaces throughout
Liverpool. Highlights will include:
- The Queen Victoria
Monument in Derby Square, which will be transformed into a temporary
hotel, 'The Villa Victoria'
- In
Williamson Square a giant screen will allow passers-by to shadow
themselves against huge projected figures
- The
top floor of St John's Market will become a dazzling gallery space
for 60 artists
- Wolstenholme
Square will become home to a new permanent sculpture of large
coloured spheres called... Penelope!
Around
250,000 people are expected to see a Biennial ''event'' which
includes work by artists from every continent on the planet.
Liverpool
Biennial is founded on a unique model of partnership between
Tate Liverpool, FACT, the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology,
Bluecoat Arts Centre, National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside
and New Contemporaries.
