| A 'normal'
cell... |
The changes
to the south entrance will include a learning centre around the
cell area. The cells will be made ‘usable’ - not for criminals but
as a tourist attraction.
The cells comprise:
1 condemned
cell - noticeable because it is the only cell with a fireplace
- considered a necessary comfort to prisoners.
1 holding
cell - for accused and sentenced just before or after their
appearance in the Criminal court.
Male & Female
cells - along a very long and very dark corridor.

| If
you think this is gloomy you should see inside. |
Along the back
of St George’s Hall there is a semi-covered passage way which was
for the police vehicles to bring defendants into the cells. They
entered at the North entrance, dropped the prisoners at the door
and then drove the vehicles out by the South Entrance.

| The writing's
on the wall. |
Inside the holding
cell there are still marks on the wall made by prisoners who were
held there.
These include
a message from a prisoner in 1871 who got 7 years!
