Kevin Williams who died at Hillsborough

Coping with the loss

A mother who lost her 15 year old son in the Hillsborough disaster explains why she can never forget that day.

Anne Williams 15 year old son Kevin was killed in the crush at Hillsborough and in the 20 years since she has battled to find out exactly how he died.

Anne believes that Kevin was alive beyond 3.15pm the time that coroner imposed as the cut off point for deaths in the disaster.

She says it is difficult for her to put in to words how Kevin's death affected her, "You can't explain what it does to you," she says.

"That's what my argument is."

At the inquest into the deaths at Hillsborough Sheffield coroner, Dr Stefan Popper ruled that by 3.15pm the deceased had received the injuries that led to their deaths and so the inquest jury would not hear evidence beyond that time.

That ruling meant the inquest did not hear evidence of the rescue operation after 3.15pm.

"It was so bad to lose him and lose him in those circumstances because we all knew he must have been scared to death," Anne told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I've heard so many survivor's stories as well.

"These are our children and we needed to know the truth from the outset and then we could have got on with our lives."

Anne says that it took her years to get over the loss of Kevin, "It takes you a long time just to come to terms with knowing what it must have been like.

"I used to wake up screaming thinking of him trapped in those cages.

"I was still getting his knife and fork out for over a year, still setting the table for him, still thinking he was going to walk in that back door.

"I couldn't come to terms with it at all."
