Footage of Runcorn and Widnes throughout the 20th century is to be shown in a screening at The Brindley in Runcorn. The North West Film Archive has organised ‘Halton on Screen’ at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 10 March, 2009, featuring films of the area over the past 90 years ![]() Carnival celebrations The screening includes pictures of members of the Royal Family on visits to the area and Runcorn’s carnival celebrations in 1938. “This is a great opportunity for the people of the Halton area to enjoy an evening with a difference and take a look back at life in their borough in the past century,” says The North West Film Archive’s Marion Hewitt. Tourism filmTrips along the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Weaver are shown as well as image of the industry that grew up along the banks of the river. ![]() Runcorn Transporter Bridge Widnes’s bids for Challenge Cup glory in 1950 and 1964 in journeys to Wembley are included as are the towns Coronation celebrations in 1953. In a 1970s BBC film Ken Dodd makes a bid to bring new tourists to the Halton area. The North West Film Archive collection at Manchester Metropolitan University holds many moving images of life in the North West of England, the collection is the largest outside London.
