A bronze memorial to Captain Noel Chavasse VC and 15 other Liverpool men awarded the Victoria Cross the highest military decoration is to be unveiled on Sunday 17th August 2008.

Bill Sergeant QPM, Chairman of the Noel Chavasse VC Memorial Association said

“The statue called ‘Liverpool’s Heroes’ is not just about Chavasse, he features prominently because he won two Victoria Crosses in the First World War. Around the base we are commemorating fifteen others who were born in Liverpool and won the Victoria Cross.

“The significance is that some of these men earned the VC 150 years ago and there has never been a memorial to any of them or those from WWI”.

The first five VCs were earned during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 and the last in 1917 during World War I and representatives from the families of those commemorated will be in attendance for the unveiling.

The unveiling will take place at 1.30pm on Sunday 17 August 2008, Abercromby Square.
