Halloween Lantern Carnival

Halloween Lantern Carnival

Sefton Park will come alive this Halloween with a procession of music, dance, puppets and pyrotechnics at the lake, all on the theme of the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations.

Halloween means Lantern Carnival time at Sefton Park, and this year’s no different with another Halloween Lantern Carnival on the 31st October, lighting up the darkest corners of the park on the scariest night of the year……boo!

The night begins with a performance at 6.15pm before the procession through the park at 6.30pm starting from the Obelisk. Hundreds of large scale lanterns and flags have been made by 21 different community groups and schools across Merseyside to light the way. Live music from the Hope and Harmony Choir, The Lantern Band and Liverpool Samba School will provide musical accompaniment to name a few - as well as a pedal powered sound and lighting system!

Street performers and dancers will entertain onlookers with Halloween costumes and spooky style dance routines as well as illuminated puppets alongside the traditional lanterns. The carnival will finish at the lakeside where the procession will be met with a large pyrotechnic display to light up the night sky.

Organisers say that this year’s procession has taken inspiration from cultures around the world, in particular the lively Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations which honour their ancestors and the continuity of life in a joyful and humorous way. The procession’s imaginary journey is one of a voyage home where preparations for a great feast are taking place in remembrance of the love ones ‘lost to this world’ and to welcome back together the dispersed friends and family.
