The BBC’s asking the nation to help rewrite the Oxford Dictionary, by digging up the origins of some Scouse words. The BBC’s asking the nation to help rewrite the Oxford Dictionary, hunt through your old letters and magazines to see if you can discover the origins of some Scouse words. It’s 250 years since Dr. Johnson wrote the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), it may have included some pretty long and complicated words - but they didn’t know much some of the Scouse ones, so they need your help to fill in the gaps! BBC Two is getting geared up for a major new series called ‘The Wordhunt Project’, in which it asks the question - where do words come from? Do you know the first time words were used? Or how were they invented? • Did anyone say they were ‘made-up’ before 1980? The word has been traced back to that date but can you find any evidence of its use before? • The Beatles sang ‘Gary Crimble To You’ in 1963 - but did you wish anyone a happy Crimble before then? You might find evidence of the word in an old book or magazine, or in letters or postcards that have dates printed on them, audio, old school books - it could be anything as long as it’s dated! Go to the Wordhunt links at the top right of the page and click on ‘contact us about this word‘. No dictionary is ever finished either, so they’re always on the look out for new words that aren’t in the dictionary but should be! If there’s a word that you and all your mates are using check whether it’s in the dictionary by following the link at the top right of this page, and if not let them know about it… and take your place in the history books (possibly anyway!). The Wordhunt Project is focusing on 50 words from all over the country altogether, so if you fancy having a go (or a laugh) at words from other parts of the country then go to their website and have a look at the rest of ‘em. You don’t have to have a dodgy cap and monocle to solve a mystery, it could be right under your nose Watson…. |
