Southport

Liberal Democrat John Pugh retained his Southport seat despite a strong challenge from Conservative Mark Bigley. The seat was number 45 on the Conservatives target list. John Pugh was first elected to the seat in 2001, taking over from Ronnie Fearn who had held the seat for the Liberal Democrats since 1997.

Claire Curtis-Thomas remains MP for Crosby a seat she first took for Labour in 1997 defeating the sitting Conservative MP Sir Malcolm Thornton, replacing his 9,000 majority with her own 7,000 one. Her majority this time is reduced down to 5,840, with a 6 per cent swing to the Liberal Democrats.

One of Labour's safest seats, Joe Benton was returned to Parliament with a 16,357 majority. Joe Benton had held the seat with the largest percentage majority of any seat in the country in 2001 with 69%

Knowsley South

Eddie O'Hara retained his seat with a majority of 17,688. The constituency which is based on the former Huyton seat of Harold Wilson has been held by Eddie O'Hara since he was elected for Labour in 1990.

Knowsley North and Sefton East

Labour's George Howarth held on to his Knowsley seat with a reduced majority of 16,269. The Liberal Democrats overtook the Conservatives to move up to second place in what is still one of Labour's safest seats.
