It is almost as if half of Liverpool has been waiting all year for the chance to dress up and party. Actually, many of them have. Last year’s crowd topped 50,000. It’s like a special Scouse bank holiday.
And the result is a colourful one as an array of glamorous - and not so glamorous - women prompt a variety of curious looks from male race-goers. The look is high summer glamour – not for the faint hearted given the chilly crosswinds that tend to sweep across the course in April. Aintree has seized on the marketing possibilities of the day, and stages an annual 'Looking Good' fashion contest. Liverpool’s finest ladies (and the odd gent) battle it out in the style stakes, with a Jaguar car worth over £20,000 - and plenty of press attention - on offer as first prize. Last year’s entrants ranged from perma-tanned young women in micro dresses to a towering gent on stilts. BBC Radio Merseyside’s Diane Oxberry was one of a panel of judges who had to find a winner from the 750 entrants in 2004. Her advice to the hopefuls on the day? ‘Remember - don’t scare the horses’.
