South Liverpool Power Cut

Thousands of homes and businesses across South Liverpool have been plunged into darkness following a major electrical fault.

BBC Radio Merseysides output on FM has been affected, but programmes can still be heard on 1485AM and on DAB Digital.

The areas affected include Speke,Garston, Allerton, Mossley Hill and parts of Wavertree. Shops, pubs and cafe's have been blacked out, and teatime's been ruined in thousands of homes. Traffic snarled up as street and traffic lights went out too. Police are warning drivers to take extra care.

Many traffic lights are out - Merseyside Police say that hi-visibility patrols are out and about to re-assure people.
Scottish Power are advising people to switch off all their electrical appliances at the plug, and to switch off all but ONE light bulb -  to prevent a surge in demand when the power eventually comes back.

The power cut is also hitting rail services - southbound trains on the Northern line aren't stopping at stations which have been blacked out. Liverpool Airport isn't affected.

The regions power suppliers - Scottish Power - say power should be restored within the hour in some places, though in others it will take longer.
