Liverpool Remembers Emlyn Hughes

by Louise Sardais
Emlyn Hughes, the former Liverpool captain, has died aged 57. We went out onto the streets of Liverpool to ask how you will remember the Reds legend.

Former Liverpool and England captain Emlyn Hughes was one of the most successful footballers of his generation. He captained Liverpool FC as well as England, and won a total of 62 caps for his country.

Emlyn retired from football altogether in 1983 and went on to enjoy a successful television career, appearing as a captain alongside Bill Beaumont on the BBC’s A Question of Sport.

Here's how people on the streets of Liverpool say they will be remembering him.

"He was a decent man, and he’ll be missed"

Paul from Leigh

“I liked the guy myself, I used to have a season ticket at the Anfield Road End – I think he showed more energy than anyone else on the pitch – I mean he became Captain of England, didn’t he? And he was a nice man, I liked the guy. It’s very sad that he won't be around any longer.”
Arthur, Hunts Cross

“I only sort of remember him from Question of Sport on the telly, and obviously I remember my dad saying that he used to be a footballer – I was quite saddened really when I heard the news because my dad thought so much of him.”
Cathy, Walton

“I’m an Evertonian, so he was always on the other side! But I’m really sad to hear that he died this morning.”
Jo, Bootle

“I remember him from ‘A Question of Sport’, it was a really good laugh – I’m too young to remember him playing football. But I know he was a good player."

“He was a great player, wasn’t he? And a decent man – he seemed to help a lot of people; he did a lot behind the scenes – like visiting people in hospital after Hillsborough. He was a decent man, and he’ll be missed."
Jimmy, Kirby

“Liverpool are magic, Everton are tragic – that’s what he’ll be remembered for!”
Bernie, Kirkdale

“I saw him on ‘A Question of Sport all the time, and I thought he was a really good laugh and a really good sport. I’m too young to have seen him as an England Captain or anything, but he seemed to be a really nice bloke.”

“He was a great footballer who will be remembered very well in Liverpool.”
Vera, Everton

“I really used to enjoy watching him and the jokes he made on A Question of Sport."
Joan, Vauxhall

“I'm really soryy to hear that he has died. He was a great footballer for Liverpool, that’s all you can say really. He did nothing wrong - there was no dirt on him, he was a good guy.”
Hughie, Leyland

The only thing I can remember is when he was on ‘A Question of Sport’. He was really good fun and a nice local person.”
