Travis @ The Cavern

Review By Dave Monks
Travis at the Cavern for ‘Radio 2 Live in Liverpool’. 5/10/04

Just a minute before the stroke of 11pm, Travis emerged on stage at The Cavern followed by Radio 2 presenter Mark Radcliffe. Mark scurried on with his fingers over his earpiece, bent over like he was suffering from a bad back. This was another night of live radio from the city as part of Radio 2’s ‘Live in Liverpool’.

The On Air sign lit up and the hysteria commenced as Mark went live across the nation. Straining to hear, he opened up with some interesting facts about the legendary Cavern before introducing Travis to the capacity crowd.

Dougie and Fran

It’s great to see a band like Travis play such a compact venue. They started with two of their best known anthems ‘Sing’ followed by ‘Turn’.  Fran Healy was grinning from ear to ear and chatted happily with the audience between the songs; talking about anything from growing old to falling in love.

It’s easy to forget that Travis have an impressive back catalogue with tracks like ‘Tied To The 90s’ and ‘Good Feeling’ performed from the their first album. These songs sounded just as impressive as the tracks their latest album ‘12 Memories’.

Travis were really bouncing on stage which encouraged the Liverpool crowd to do the same. The Cavern was like a sweat shop, even Fran Healy asking at one point if anyone had any spare oxygen. He settles for a pint of beer instead but dissapointed the crowd by only managing to down half of it on one go. Despite the sauna, the lads from Travis played for an hour and a half and did all their best know songs, nobody left dissapointed.

For the encore Travis decided to swap things about a bit. Dougie was given lead vocal duty and Fran was left with the tamborine. Mark Radcliffe rejoined the band onstage to play drums for the second rendition of the crowd favourite ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me? This rounded off a great gig that went well on past the live broadcast time -  the band were enjoying themselves that much.
