The character and culture of Liverpool lies at the heart of the festival which runs from 18th September until 28th November at Tate Liverpool, The Walker, Bluecoat Arts Centre and FACT, as well as smaller galleries and some surprising and unique venues across the city. Energy and creativity define the programme which is the focus of the four main events – International 04, John Moores 23, Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2004 and Independents 04.
International 04 guarantees visitors a unique experience of art and Liverpool, emphasisng the relationship between the artist and the community. Independents 04 sees a range of work from artists, architects, filmmakers and is located at various venues across the city including small galleries to unique spaces in disused buildings. John Moores 23 is the UK’s most prestigious and longest-running open painting competition. It has been hosted at The Walker since 1957 and is open to all artists living and working in the UK. The five judges include Ann Bukantas, The Walker’s curator of fine art, Jarvis Cocker, musician and art collector, Gill Hedley, director of Contemporary Art Society, Callum Innes artist and former John Moores prizewinner and artist Gavin Turk. This year the prize money stands at £25,000. Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2004 is the annual exhibition bringing the best of graduate and student work selected from Fine Art Colleges across the UK.
