Liverpool is World Heritage Site |

Liverpool's
World Heritage Status was confirmed at a meeting of UNESCO's World
Heritage Committee in Suzhou, near Shanghai. It means the city now
ranks alongside other world heritage locations such as the Taj Mahal,
Stonehenge and the Pyramids.

Liverpool's
bid was based on it's maritime history and significance as a port
in the period of Britain's greatest global influence. The area covered
by World Heritage Status includes several parts of the city centre
including the waterfront, the commercial area of warehouses and merchant's
houses around Duke Street and the William Brown Street area.
The announcement is a further boost to the city in the run up to Capital
of Culture in 2008. Heirtage Minister Lord McIntosh said "This
is wonderful news for Liverpool. I congratulate all those who worked
so hard for the success of this nomination and indeed the city and
people of Liverpool. They have every right to feel proud. coming on
top of their nomination last year as Capital of Culture 2008 this
announcement marks yet another step in the continuing regeneration
of the city."
Leader of Liverpool City Council Mike Storye said "This is the
news we have been waiting for, It's another great boost to the city's
image and confidence and recognition of the importance of the city's
unique architectural legacy." |
