BBC Four's new documentary series The National Trust looks at the saga behind the restoration of John Lennon's childhood home.

Opened to the public earlier this year Mendips is the pebble dash semi where John Lennon lived for 16 years. His widow Yoko Ono bought the property and donated it to The National Trust.

The inside story of the Trust's makeover follows the National Trust team, headed by Julian Gibbs, as they tackle the out of the ordinary taks of restoring the modest semi, which had been stripped bare of all Lennon memorabilia, apart from an aquamarine bath suite.

In addition to the problems of restoring the house to a 1950's look the Trust's team have to battle with Yoko Ono's advisors who believe the power of Lennon's home is comparable with that of the Tower of London and Warwick Castle.

The programme is part of a series looking at what goes on behind closed doors at The National Trust, one of Britain's most powerful and political forces.
