Character & Cast
Flintwinch is the sole male servant in the House of Clennam. He's worked there for years and knows all the family secrets. He therefore has much more sway over affairs than Mrs Clennam would like him to. He's the only person who dares to stand up to her, and theirs is a tempestuous relationship. He takes out his frustration and aggression on his poor, timid wife, Affery.
One of the veteran cops in hit drama New Tricks, Alun's been a familiar face on screen since the 1970s. Starting his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company with which he spent 9 years, he moved on to play Monsieur Thénardier in the original production of Les Miserables, a role for which he earned a Lawrence Olivier nomination for best actor.
Other notable parts have been Inspector Bucket in the BBC adaptation of Bleak House and Austin Donahue in our Friends in the North. Alun has also starred in the ITV drama Between the Sheets with his son Joe Armstrong.
