Maureen
is the writer of a local folk lore book called 'A Lincolnshire Calendar',
all about county traditions and customs all year round.
Halloween
predates Christianity and it's beginnings are a little shrouded
in mystery. Was it the Celtic druids or even before them that Halloween
started.
Maureen
Sutton talks about the beginnings of Halloween, sacrifices and bone
fires (Real 56, 1'29")

There
is a story about a little well outside Lincoln Cathedral near the
Chapter House. At one time there were little holes in it that you
could look through.
The
superstition was that on All Hallows' Eve if you ran backwards around
it seven times and looked through the little holes in the wall you
would see the devil.
Find out
what happened to one of Maureen's friends who tried it. Also more
Lincolnshire customs (Real 56, 57")
A little
song for you now, "A soul, a soul, a soul cake. Please good
missus a soul cake, an' I'll pull a pair of plum an cherry, any
good thing to make us merry. A soul, a soul, a soul cake".
Commercialism,
Harry Potter and soul cakes (Real 56, 1'24")
Remember
this one. A bowl full of water and picking an apple from it with
your teeth.
Bobbing
for apples, Guy Fawkes and mischief night (Real 56, 2'43")
What
was it like during and after the Second World War? Quite different
to today as Maureen explains.

and after The Second World War. Also about casting a stone into
the fire (Real 56, 2'15")
