H
is for Haxey Hood. Which is a game played in the North of the county
on St John's Eve (January 6th). It resembles a giant medieval rugby
match with many people taking part. The legend behind this custom
is that in the 14th Century the wife of Sir John De Mowbray, a prominent
landowner, lost her hood whilst riding towards Westwoodside on the
hill that separates it from Haxey. Some farm workers chased her hood
to rescue it wanting the reward for saving the hood. These locals
were known as 'Boggans' because of the boggy fens. They did all receive
their reward - a half acre of land on the understanding that they
re-enact the chase each year.
