'I've always wanted to do it and I thought it would be a good opportunity to raise some money for charity,' she said.

A friend of Kelly's saw a flier in the student union office and challenged Kelly to do the parachute jump.

Kelly arrived at the airfield early in the morning but the jump was put off on a number of occasions due to poor weather conditions. As the hours ticked by the nerves began to set in. But when she finally got up into the air she was extremely excited.

When the plane reached the height of 13,500 feet Kelly was asked to move to the open door of the plane.

'The worst part was when I was sat with my legs dangling out of the plane. I had to tap my instructor on the shoulder and then we jumped.'

Before the parachute was opened Kelly was travelling at 140 miles per hour. When the parachute opened she slowed down considerably and passed through the clouds and could see the land beneath her.

'At one point I was trying to find the air base but all I could see was fields and roads until my instructor pointed the base out to me.'

Each jump costs between £280 and £350 depending upon the jump you choose to do. At least £180 of the money raised goes towards providing emergency heaters, fuel vouchers, food parcels and blankets for older people at risk.

Kelly said that she thinks students should put something back into the community.

'I have an eighty-year-old gran and I don't think the older generation are respected enough in our society, especially by people my age.'

Kelly said that she is glad to have raised money for a good cause whilst doing something that so many people never get to do in their lifetime.

'It's such an exhilarating feeling, I would definitely do it again. I can understand why people get the bug'

Kelly has already raised £270 and donated £70 pounds of the money herself. There are 26 centres throughout the UK open all year round where you can perform your jump.
