Talk phobias - what are you afraid of?
Spiders on a man's face.

Spiders, heights, water, snakes or even buttons are just some of the things which people have a phobia of.

What we want to know is what really scares you? What makes your spine tingle?

Fear of spiders is one of the most common phobias

{add comment}

Most people are scared of something, but some phobias are very unusual. Let us know if you have heard of or suffer from any weird and wonderful phobias. How about taphephobia (fear of being buried alive), alektorophobia (fear of chickens) or even phobophobia (fear of fears)?

Bullet point.One of my sons has a button phobia and I don't know what to do to help him he is only 6 and goes into hysterical crys at that thought of wearing anything with buttons. he won't look at anyone who is wearing buttons and it is hard to explain to people that he is not being rude when they talk to him he is afraid of buttons. I know why it has started but can't fix it. Someone, not sure who, has told him that buttons will choke him and I assume it is in reference to putting it into his mouth or something but since he has never done anything like that I don't know why they would have said that to him. I have another son who is 7 and he has a fear of Balloons and it is so sever it gives him anxiety attackes at the thought of them popping.

Bullet point.I am so glad to hear that I am not alone! I have an incredible fear of buttons. Some are much worse then others, I especially hate the transparent ones with 4 holes. The really small buttons totally freak me out. It makes it very hard to go shopping for clothes, I'm so afraid that I will touch one by accident. I have become a little more tolerant of solid faced buttons, the ones that have no holes.

Bullet point.I never had heard of anyone else like me- how refreshing! Other people who are afraid of buttons. I don't know why I hate them so much, but even as a child buttons made me sick. My grandmother would show her button collection to me and it was horrible. I never wore (and still don't) wear anything with buttons on it. I can hardly eat my lunch sometimes when my best friend is sitting across from me wearing a shirt with buttons. I must admit I have one pair of pants with an actual button (the metal ones aren't so bad) though. I sometimes wonder if something about the thread in the buttons that makes me feel sick when i see them because I hate calico fabric and the inside of knitted sweaters or pockets with threads. I associate buttons with the threads sometimes. If anyone would let me know a name for fear of buttons, where it comes from I would be very interested. usgymnast86@hotmail.com

Bullet point.Came across your site just by chance and was relieved to see that others too suffer from the same phobia that I do (that is a button phobia). I even had difficulty in typing the word and certainly am unable to look at it now. I have absolutely no idea when/why mine started although it must have been for a specific reason as used to quite happily play with a tin of them that my mum had for sewing purposes. The very mention of the word by myself or another, or the sight of a "not nice" one is enough to put me off a meal or make me feel nauseous and as for ones lying on the ground - I cannot even go there! I was given a hard time about it by my family until they found an article about this specific phobia which even gave its name. I've long lost this now and would appreciate it if anyone can advise me of its official title. I shall certainly be in touch with others that have written to you. Its so good to know I am not alone! Long live zippers, press studs and velcro.

Bullet point.i was reading about the cotton phobics not having a name for their phobia. well, since most phobias have are written in Latin, such as arachnaphobia with is Latin for spider, the Latin word for cotton is 'gossypion'. so for all the people who are afraid of cotton your phobia has a name: gossypionphobia

Bullet point.This may sound silly but i have a phobia of Balls. By this I mean Basket, foot e.t.c. I hate them coming less than a metre away, if they do i curl up in a ball and sweat till it has gone. Does anyone else?

Bullet point.After reading the section on phobias, I decided to tell my very unusual one. I have never met anyone else with this one -- yet. I am deathly afraid of butterflies! When I was small (I don't even remember) one flew in my face. My Mother told me of this and I have no memory, but I absolutely go into a cold sweat and usually run when I see one. I always drive with my car windows up.

Bullet point. I suffer from Dubyaphobia. Does anyone else? Symptoms:-feelings of nausia, and anxiety every time George Dubya opens his mouth.

Bullet point.I have phobia of buttons. I hate them. Sometimes I even can't name them. I'd like to contact another buttons phobics, my email is katzc@terrazared.com.ar. The first memory I have is from when I was around 7 years old (now I am 28), I remember my brother sucking one, and in that moment (and also now) it makes me feel really disgusting. It is like I am going to vomit, but I never do. It was just some months ago I began telling people that sometimes I cannot look at them because of buttons. When I told it to my friends, I said it is not a phobia, it is just I don't like this object, but they showed me that I can't develop a completely normal life because of my phobia. And, although I think I am just a bit phobic and I can manage to stand them, I think they are right. Specially because I realised that, for example, once I left my boyfriend because he wore a shirt with buttons. My family still don't know it, but now I have a little niece, and as babies have all the clothes with buttons, I think I will tell them about my phobia. I also don't have problems with jeans buttons, and before reading the other comments, I used to feel a bit like a traitor. I confess I have a trouser (not jeans) with a button: I learned to live with it because it is the only trouser I really love how it wears on me; but now that this button is getting threadbare I am starting to think I will not be able to stand it anymore.

Bullet point.I was reading the fear people have about cotton, my fear is anything fuzzy. I am so afraid of those white fuzzy things that float around in the spring and summer time, some come from trees and others come from dandelines. One time I was going to the grocery store, those white fuzzy things were flying around everywhere. I was so scared, I could not get out of my car. If I am driving down the road, and I see the fuzzies, I roll my window up, I don't care if it is 90 degrees out. I am also afraid to clean the lint out of my dryer. I don't like anything soft and fuzzy, not even cotton balls.
