Tennyson's life in picturesAlfred, Lord Tennyson was born in 1809 and died in 1892. He was born into a horse-drawn world, and by the end of his life steam trains were the normal way of getting about. At the beginning, to preserve someone's likeness, a portrait had to be painted – by the end just about everybody, rich or poor, had their photograph taken. ![]() The changing face of the portrait There's little doubt that Tennyson was very image conscious, even if 'The Dirty Monk' image is what we would call scruffy today (in fact it was then). But it's carefully tended – he's a poet, and this is how he felt a poet should look.
