Words & Images: A Linolnshire hermit speaks

I am a hermit.  I live in solitude and silence in a small Lincolnshire village and have taken a vow to stay here for the rest of my life.

St Cuthbert's House is the name of my hermitage & workshop where I design and print greeting cards from beautiful & original hand-scribed texts.

Rather perversely, for a hermit, I love words!  My calligraphy is a means of slowing them down - a way of exploring and valuing the particular form and identity of each word, each phrase, enabling them to speak eloquently from the stillness & the silence.  To put pen to paper is to reveal the identity of the word; to give form to the phrase; to speak something of what is true.

The texts I work with may not always be overtly spiritual, but still they all resonate with me in some way. It is a great gift to discover a hitherto unfamiliar or unappreciated verse through working on a design.  It becomes a familiar companion in both work & prayer – in a life where companionship might appear to be in short supply, that is not a bad thing at all!
