The Mix Introducing Elliott Morris

There have been some amazing musicians in recent years. Seasick Steve sounds great with only three strings. Jools Holland plays a mean tune on a piano. And then there is Lincolnshire's Elliott Morris, who you really need to see to believe.

Someone that plays in the same manner as Elliott Morris is always going to receive comparisons to Newton Faulkner, but Elliott doesn't mind. "I got into this style before I'd even heard of him," he says. "I am influenced by him, but it is an easy comparison."

This Is All I Am

Elliott has just completed the finishing touches to his latest EP - 'This Is All I Am'. It features six tracks, four are acoustic and were recorded in Swinderby the other two make use of a full band and were recorded in Essex with InMe frontman David McPherson. "I realize that my music needs backing, but the guitar and vocals are still the focus" says Elliott. "I like to batter the guitar, but it's sometimes difficult to get the sound across in the studio."

Indeed our own virtuoso's influences stretch beyond that of the ginger dread-locked guitarist, sighting artists such as: Frank Turner, John Martin, John Mayer and Andy Roach. In fact, it was the latter that turned Elliott to this style of music, "my guitar teacher Andy Taylor showed me an Andy Roach DVD and from then on I knew that is what I wanted to do." But that's easier said than done, and anyone who has seen him perform will confirm this. Elliott's hands move between guitar neck and body in a blur of motion, executing pull offs, hammers ons and drums beats with astonishing accuracy.

But how did he get to such an impressive level? "Natural progression I suppose, I got to a wall in my playing and wanted to try some different." Perhaps what is most impressive is that despite having a Grade 8 in rock guitar under his belt, his current style is entirely self taught. "To me the acoustic guitar is a box with strings, essentially it's a drum, so I like to use it like one," such an outlook has allowed Elliott to experiment more with his music, and it has to be said, with great success.
