A Genetic Boost for the Natterjack Toad in Lincolnshire

A local population of Europe's noisiest amphibian, the natterjack toad, is to receive a genetic boost - thanks to work by Natural England and The University of Sussex.

There are only 50 populations of natterjacks in the whole of England, and it is hoped that the infusion of new blood into the local population will help the Lincolnshire toads thrive, and remove the need for artificial rearing of tadpoles every year.

Spawn from Sandy in Bedfordshire is being introduced to the specially created pond areas at the Saltfleetby Theddlethorpe Dunes Natural Nature Reserve which is home to the most northerly natterjack toad population on the east coast.
