Lincolnshire's Paralympians

Great Britain will be among the best represented nations at the upcoming Paralympics as a 212 strong squad, including two from Lincolnshire, head to Beijing with high hopes of pushing the hosts in the medal table.

In the Aquatics Centre, also known as the 'Water Cube', Rob Welbourn from Deeping will be looking to add to his relay gold from Athens.

The 21 year old admits to nerves as the games approach "I don't know if having been to a Games before is helping or not. In a way you know what to expect a little bit, but you also understand how big they actually are. I'm probably a bit more nervous now than I was before Athens."

Rob, who is a member of Lincoln Vulcans, has been training in Swansea in preparation for the Games this year, "This year has been really good for me. I improved on my time for the 400m (freestyle) earlier this year, which was a big confidence boost."

Because there aren't many international competitions over the year for swimmers, it is hard to assess his chances, but defence of the 4x100m relay crown is a priority.

"We won a gold in the relay in Athens, and we all want to defend that title, "he said, referring to the victorious squad also consisting of Matthew Walker, Graham Edmunds and David Roberts.

Hollie Arnold

The youngest member of the GB squad this year is 14-year old Hollie Arnold from Holton-le-Clay. She will be competing in the F40-46 category in the Javelin for single arm amputees. So is she nervous or excited?

"A bit of both really, maybe more nervous. It will be my first time ever competing for Great Britain."

With no experience of a Paralympic Games before, Hollie has been tapping into her coach as a means of information, "My coach Shelley (Holroyd) has been to the Olympics, so she's been telling me what to expect."

With London 2012 coming, both Rob and Hollie are eager to compete, but as the organisers re-think the structure of competitions, there are fears that Hollie may not be able to compete. "Hopefully everyone will fight against it, "she said.

Rob said: "I definitely want to be in London. I think the experience of swimming in front of your home crowd would be something special."

Before then of course, the eyes of the county will once again fall on Beijing, and our Paralympians can't wait to get out there.
