The aims of the society were to promote and encourage interest in drama, readings and to produce and perform plays. In 1939 membership swelled to over 200 and Playgoers staged its first full-length production, The Constant Nymph, which made a profit of £6 11s 9d! Performed play-readings were then introduced. Costumed, but with no sets and read from a script, which enabled six plays to be presented over three months for an inclusive charge of five shillings (25p!). Winter seasons of readings still continue and are performed in a school hall. These readings enable the Society to try out new ideas and innovations and are an opportunity for new actors, directors and even new writers. Throughout the war years men billeted at H.M.S. Royal Arthur, (now Butlin's Skyline) boosted membership and play readings continued in the Baptist Church Hall. 1946 saw a return to the Arcadia Theatre and a membership of over 800! The society have performed in the Pier, Parade and Arcadia Theatres, nowadays, there is only the Embassy Theatre in Skegness. In 1949 a One-Act Play Festival was launched in the Pier Theatre. Fourteen drama groups entered and there were four awards. In 1960 the Festival was extended to include full-length plays. The number of trophies has risen to fifteen, covering the whole spectrum of theatre. The Skegness Festival is one of the few remaining independent festivals and is held in the Embassy Centre in Skegness. ![]() Skegness Youth Theatre Children have always been encouraged within the society and have their own junior section (CADS) who meet weekly and perform their own productions. Skegness Playgoers now produce 2 full length plays, an adult play festival, a youth festival and three performed play readings each year.
