Dancing Lotus

Dancing Lotus live in session on The Friday Night Mix

Never before has The Mix seen so many people in the studio. Other than the biggest drum kit in the world (The Contact) things are looking busy. But that can only mean one thing; Dancing Lotus are in session.

They're currently the county's biggest band, comprising of 8 members. Jack, Lanre, TMD, Nick, Woody, Luke, Tyrone and the man that is Joe Mac all bring something different to the band. Blending a heady mix of gospel, choir and funk, The Lotus certainly are in a league of their own.

The band feel Lincolnshire is on the move, "It's not really known as a good musical county, it has just been avoided for some time but now things are starting to look up." Continuing on the county theme the band feel that their unique blend of, well everything, makes it hard for promoters around the county to put other bands on a bill with them. "We've clashed with bands from different genres when put on certain bills, it’s hard to get a line-up that suits us".

"When I’m with the band I like to blend into the background, and let the music do the talking "

Joe Mac

A defining moment in the band's, so far brief, career has being winning a talent contest at The Engine Shed. A feat that Jack (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) feels did the band a whole lot of good, "Winning the contest has spurred us on, to go on and do more".

But hang on there just a minute. Something is happening that The Mix has never seen before. Joe Mac, yes I'll say his name again Joe Mac isn't saying a word. But it becomes apparent when I ask Joe as to why this is, "When I’m with the band I like to blend into the background, and let the music do the talking". And just for the record -  Joe Mac wears funky socks.

The band's earned themselves the prestigious title of the only band around to have their own night once a month. The last Thursday of every month at Kind in Lincoln is dedicated to the Pillow Sessions, where the guys show their silky skills in a toned down environment. But that doesn't mean the music is toned down, "The tunes will be full on, people who come to our gigs generally go away very surprised and impressed".

The future is starting to look extremely rosy for 'The Lotus'. The band already have the title of The University of Lincoln's students' favourite band (their opening night party for their album should confirm this) and new tracks just seem to be seeping out  all the time. But what is next for them? "We're hoping the album takes us out of the county, Glastonbury would be nice, we just want everyone to hear our music".

So there you have it. A performance that blew away all at Mix HQ, a most interesting interview and a band that will have you dancing until your feet hurt and you have no breath left.
