The cast of Nightfall
The cast of Nightfall

Nightfall: Blackfriars Arts Centre, Boston

By Contributor June Atkins
When a secret steps out from the shadows. Can the past catch up with the present?

Cast & Crew

  • Jonathan Coote – Edward Kingsley
  • Pauline Whitaker – Emily Kingsley
  • Catherine Harvey – Kate Saskell
  • Michael Cabot – Director
  • Joanna Murray-Smith - Writer

'Tell me about the call?', Emily begs once more with a child like excitement.
Pouring a whisky for them both Edward replies, 'She said we would talk Sunday.
And today's Sunday, nearly nightfall, a few minutes to six'.

Edward & Emily Kingsley have been waiting for this moment for seven years - just a few more moments to wait for her return.

As nightfall approaches the doorbell rings. A woman steps out from the shadows.
A somewhat vague Edward steps back when the stranger moves into the light.
A stranger with news, news of Cora, their precious Daughter, lost; troubled; alone.
Here to bring Cora back, to restore their family, their little girl, daddy's little girl.

This is more than they could have dreamt of – except there is a price to pay, a very high price to pay, one that may alter their lives beyond any dream they could ever have imagined, one that could destroy their very being, and as the niceties slowly diminish, very soon our three stray from the existence they have foregone to bring them all headfirst into the future.

Slowly the intimate truth rears, and our characters swing into such an intense play on words you slowly begin to piece together a very tight jigsaw.
As selective memory moves freely between Edward and Emily, the harsh tongue of Kate Saskell delivers us a window, free to watch, free to judge and free to be jury on this very secretive pair.

You soon learn how Edward's world, a world befitting a company director had crumbled years since, the nice mock Tudor mansion, the cars, the boat, the holidays, all lost along with, job; status; and his dignity.

How Emily quite, dismissive, had lived on her nerves, has been happy to walk in her husbands shadow, and to turn a blind eye to his deeds, his past, and his relationship with his Daughter. A Daughter whom had once been a happy child but to rebel  shortly after her eleventh birthday, and to leave home after her sixteenth.

Will this couple ever find closure? Will Cora ever come back? And can a memory ever be wiped clean?

Brilliantly staged and directed, Jonathan Coote as Edward Kingsley displays a head of the house character, loves his wife and daughter, the lifestyle, until all is lost. 'Whatever happens I Love you', he states to his wife. We question does he turn evil, abuse his child, commit infidelity?

Catherine Harvey as Kate Saskell, holds her own, stands up to Edward. You wonder if she just marginally tolerates Emily. She spits with venom. A truth to be faced or Cora never comes home. Pauline Whitaker as Emily Kingsley loves her daughter, husband, life, at a cost? 'Make up a story', she pleads with her husband. Can she really turn a blind eye? Is there such a worthlessness that exists?

A truly resplendent performance from all actors, a truth with a twist. Are there issues? You decide. Our actor and actresses are both enticing and coaxing, the audience fed on the tension then drunk from the very cup London Classic Theatre Company offered.
A compelling thriller and a production worthy of considerable praise.

'Nightfall' will be returning to Lincolnshire at the Stamford Arts Centre 6th June 2007.
