On May 26th 2007 the Church of England will make history in Lincolnshire as it hosts the first U2Charist; a Holy Communion Service which uses the songs of U2 instead of traditional hymns. One of the first U2Charists was held in St George's Church, York Harbor, Maine in North Eastern USA in July 2005. This will be the same model for U2charist Lincoln, which is being used by Reverend Paige Blair and her congregation. This groundbreaking form of worship has also been used in other American churches and has travelled as far as Hong Kong and New Zealand. The band's music rocks out as the lyrics appear on a large screen, accompanied by images of global poverty and human need. It's not just about belting out Bono classics, but a sharp reminder to help fellow human beings who through no choice of their own find themselves struggling to survive on a daily basis.

Bono is global ambassador for the Millennium Development Goals who want to try and eradicate dehumanising conditions by 2015, and so the collection from the service goes to charities that are working to these ends. People of all ages are attending the U2Charist's and for the church in York Harbor they've also welcomed new members as a direct result of hosting this new form of worship. The first U2Charist for the Church of England will be at St Swithin's Church in Lincoln at 5pm on Saturday 26th May. Anyone is very welcome to experience this and admission is free. The collection will go towards helping local and international charities working towards the MDG's. As we need to check numbers please call BBC Radio Lincolnshire on 01522 821000 to have your seat reserved. |
