St George's Church advertising U2Charist

U2 Rocks the Church

By Sue Edwards, Religious Producer.
When Bono sat down with the other members of U2 and wrote songs such as '40' and 'Peace on Earth' were they really writing them for the church to sing? Well they are - In America, Hong Kong, New Zealand and soon the first one for the UK in Lincoln.

What are the Millennium Development Goals?

  • Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty.
  • Achieve universal primary education.
  • Promote gender equality and empower women.
  • Reduce child mortality.
  • Improve maternal health.
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
  • Ensure environmental stability.
  • Develop a global partnership for development.

On May 26th 2007 the Church of England will make history in Lincolnshire as it hosts the first U2Charist; a Holy Communion Service which uses the songs of U2 instead of traditional hymns.

One of the first U2Charists was held in St George's Church, York Harbor, Maine in North Eastern USA in July 2005. This will be the same model for U2charist Lincoln, which is being used by Reverend Paige Blair and her congregation. This groundbreaking form of worship has also been used in other American churches and has travelled as far as Hong Kong and New Zealand.

The band's music rocks out as the lyrics appear on a large screen, accompanied by images of global poverty and human need. It's not just about belting out Bono classics, but a sharp reminder to help fellow human beings who through no choice of their own find themselves struggling to survive on a daily basis.

The first U2Charist for the Church of England will be at St Swithin's Church in Lincoln at 5pm on Saturday 26th May. Anyone is very welcome to experience this and admission is free.

The collection will go towards helping local and international charities working towards the MDG's.  As we need to check numbers please call BBC Radio Lincolnshire on 01522 821000 to have your seat reserved.
