Whitebeam on the mend

An Albino seal that was rescued recently by the Natureland Seal Sanctuary in Skegness is making great progress.

He was named Whitebeam when he arrived at the sanctuary on the 11th of December last year.

According to the Vets, Whitebeam was suffering from Lungworm which is a parasite that lives in the seal’s lungs. This makes it difficult for the seals to hold their breath for long periods underwater which means that they can't catch fish. The seal then become weaker until it gets washed up ashore completely exhausted.

Whitebeam also had his flippers cut. He is now doing very well at the sea hospital and he should hopefully be ready for release back into the sea towards the end of February.

Albino seals are rare but usually they have the same chances as any seal for a long and varied life.
