The whale was eventually removed from the beach, and destroyed and buried. Prior to this, experts from the Natural History Museum in London took some parts of the whale away for research into the specimen.
The adult male sperm whale (which had died), was originally spotted on the morning of the 14th February on the beach near the North Shore Road in Skegness. Help playing audio/video Pat Fowler, Head of Environmental Services at East Lindsey District Council said they have to follow several procedures before disposing of the mammal, "We have notified the Receiver Of Wrecks as we're obliged to, they're based in Southampton, they will ultimately pay for removal and disposal costs. We've also notified the Natural History Museum again as we're required to do. We can't do anything in respect of the whale until they have had a look at it". last updated: 07/04/2008 at 17:23 SEE ALSOYou are in: Lincolnshire > Nature > Whale washed up on the Lincolnshire Coast |
