Sleaford RFC

Horncastle 2nd XV 7-17 Sleaford 4th XV

By Stephen Atkinson.
Horncastle 2nd's entertained the Sleaford 4th's after the defeat at Lincoln last weekend. Sleaford were prepared for a battle.

The first half

Sleaford Rugby Football Club won the toss and on a dark and dismal day the game was under way. The Sleaford pack were chasing the ball and 'pounded' the Horncastle's catcher. Needless to say the ball returned to the Red and Blacks and Horncastle had just met the Sleaford second row of Dave Mullen and Stu James, and was to soon to meet the flying number eight, Stu Moran knocking Horncastle's fly-half to the ground forcing them deeper into their own twenty-two. The first scrummage and Horncastle were about to be introduced to the front row of Bains, Davies and Coleman.

The excellent scrummaging found Sleaford winning 90% of the ball which gave scrum-half John Houseman plenty of options. Sleaford were soon a try in front with an outstanding run from fly-half, Adam Green. Julian Green on the wing managed to power his way over for a try, one of the very few balls that made it to the wings. The rest of the backs of Richard Clarricoates, Ian Walker and Ashley Goodwin were left with very much a defensive game. This weeks game plan was very much a 'forwards' orientated game.

The second half

Into the second half and Horncastle's front row were bruised and battered and Sleaford had to lend them their very experienced front-row player of Steve Thompson. Sleaford were soon back into flowing play, Stu Moran was the next player to score with a powerful move using the flankers Toby Cox and Tariq Hayat, converted by Adam Green, the score was now 17-0. The travelling supporters of Sleaford were euphoric.

Inside centre, Kev Kitchen took a bad knock and had to be replaced by the legendary Andy Crawford, putting even more experience onto the pitch. A penalty deep into the Sleaford 22 and Horncastle found a gap, Sleafords defence was being tested, but tried legs could not hold them out and a subsequent try followed and was converted. To increase the power in the scrum, manager Dave Ambler was introduced into the second row to provide more muscle in an attempt to keep the ball in Horncastle's half of the pitch. This was maintained and the score stood at 17-7. A well earned win on a damp day but again the Sleaford 4th's were triumphant, with great travelling supporters and of course the infamous sweetie lady. Man of the Match went to Toby Cox.
