However, there was plenty of success for a number of the University of Lincoln's sports teams. A team enjoying a great start to the season are the men's rugby union 1st team; despite a setting off at the break of dawn for a midday kick off at University of Warwick the Lincoln side managed to maintain their 100% start to the season with a 30-12 win. The big test is now just around the corner as they face Nottingham Trent in a top of the table match this coming Wednesday. Not to be outdone the men's 2nd's racked up a win of their own with a narrow 12-10 victory away at De Montfort University, Leicester. Sadly the feats of the Union sides couldn't be matched in the other code as despite a fourth try in as many matches from Chris Wright, the men's rugby league side went down 20-4 at home to University of Nottingham 2nd's. The netball 2nd team continue to show signs of improvement as they chase their first win of the season. Sadly it was not to come away at Nottingham Trent University 3rd's as despite matching their hosts a poor second quarter proved Lincoln's undoing as they lost out 30-22. Back on home territory the netball 1st's matched their opponents from University of Nottingham from start to finish, but looked to also be heading to defeat, trailing by seven in the closing minutes. However, a dramatic late fight-back including a run of six successive points helped the home side haul back the deficit and beat the clock to secure a remarkable 25-25 draw. Basketball After experiencing winning ways last week the men's basketball team were looking to carry on where they left off on the road at University of Nottingham. However, despite a strong performance Lincoln couldn't match a strong Notts side, eventually losing 86-58. Also in Nottingham, but down the road at Trent University the men's badminton team maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign, tying 4-4 with the hosts. Football

It was a pretty positive day on the football field, starting with a much needed home win for the men's 2nd team. Two goals from Alex Saitch and a long range effort from Charlie Opera secured the points in a 3-1 victory over University of Nottingham 3rd's. Also at home were the men's 3rd team who managed to register a 2-1 win over Oxford Brookes University 3rd's in a fiery encounter at Ruston Marconi Sports Ground. The only other football side to see action were the men's 5th team who continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-2 draw away to University of Derby 3rd's. Both the Lincoln goals came from the penalty spot; Steve Nurse scoring the first, with Carl Russo salvaging a point with the second in the 89th minute. Hockey Outside on the Notts Trent artificial surface, Lincoln's men's hockey first team also shared the spoils with the home side, registering a 3-3 draw to extend their unbeaten run to three matches. Unfortunately the Lincoln 2nd's couldn't match their 1st team counterparts as they suffered a disappointing 10-0 defeat away to a physical University of Derby 1st team. Golf Luck was out on the fairways too for Lincoln this week with both of the University's golf teams suffering defeats. A win for Mark Skinner was the only bright spot for the 1st's as they returned from their match against Loughborough University 2nd's with a 5-1 defeat. The 2nd's faired slightly better, losing out 4-2 away at the hands of Northampton 1st's, Alex Byland, and Mark Robson providing the winning rounds. |
