Monday morning's qualifying was held in very wet conditions and it was the Crossle of Nelson Rowe that took control to claim pole position by 1.6 seconds from Neil Fowler, driving his less familiar Merlyn. Such was the ease with which Nelson progressed that all of the cars were briefly impounded after qualifying for additional scrutineering checks. Happily nothing untoward was found.

The race, which formed the finale to a wonderful weekend and was held under clear skies and bright early evening sunshine, saw Neil Fowler take advantage into the first corner as he got the jump on Nelson Rowe. Rowe was all over the back of Fowler on the opening lap with Jason Minshaw hanging on, the three cars immediately breaking from the remainder of the pack. Virtually attached to Fowler's gearbox, Rowe tried a couple of moves to pass Fowler, one noticeable effort saw him extremely close to the pit wall on the top straight, but he never quite had the traction to pull it off. Lap 4 On lap 4 however he made a move around the outside of Fowler at the first corner of the lap, Old Hall and managed to make it stick as they streamed through Cascades. By this time Minshaw had started to drop away from the relentless pace of the top two. Rowe immediately pulled away and it looked like game over for Fowler but the following lap saw Rowe run wide and Fowler squeezed back up the inside at Lakeside to retake the lead.

At Knickerbrook less than half a lap later, Rowe who had edged ahead again but was forced to take to the escape road at the chicane having had two wheels on the grass after Fowler defended the chicane "robustly". Fowler retook the again and it was Rowe who recommenced his pursuit. By lap 10 Rowe had dragged himself back onto the gearbox of Fowler and looked set for some last lap heroics. Unfortunately we were robbed of the spectacle as he slowed on the penultimate lap with a blown engine, the efforts of the afternoon obviously proving too much. This left Neil to cruise to victory over the final lap, finishing 6.88 seconds clear of his nearest rival. More importantly the win, and non-finish by Rowe, has moved him within 15 points of the championship lead with just two rounds remaining setting up an enthralling climax. |
