Brilliant battle earns class win

By Rebecca Hobbs.
University of Lincoln racing driver, Dominic Lesniewski came away from the latest Britsports race victorious with a well earned class win and second overall.

The latest Britsports event took place at Oulton Park (Cheshire) and saw Dominic attend just days after returning from Poland where he had been performing with the South London based Polish Folk Group, Karolinka at the World Festival of Polish Folk Dance.

A distinct change of pace from dancing to driving saw Dominic ease from Poland to Pole! In a lightening display on Saturday morning, Dominic took Pole Position by 1.2 seconds from his nearest rival of the 20 cars entered.

"Qualifying was excellent" said Dominic afterwards. "Having discussed with the team and tyre specialists when my optimum lap would be in regard to tyre performance, I knew my fifth flying lap would be the best. I already had pole but wanted to see just how much lower we could take the lap time and sure enough on my fifth qualifying lap I took the gap to over a second so we were all really buoyed."

Whilst Dominic usually competes in the hour and a half races with a partner, the weekend (7th August), saw Dominic as sole driver of the Juno SSV6, an exciting and challenging prospect.

Disaster was set to strike

Dominic's good form continued as he lead the pack away from the grid in first position in sunny conditions. But, disaster was set to strike on Lap 15.

"As I came into the final corner I suffered brake fade" reported Dominic, "so I immediately radioed the team that I would be straight into the pits. Once there, they took the back of the car off and the rear left brake calliper caught fire! There were fire extinguishers everywhere but I didn't need to get out of the car and before I knew it the team had fixed the problem and I was ready to go again."

After the minor drama, Dominic was back out on track dead last and two laps behind the leader, a scenario which would see many a driver give up hope but not so the Lincoln University student. In an amazing display, Dominic was soon lapping an astonishing seven seconds a lap quicker than the front runners. Making massive inroads with each lap, Dominic was back in contention with the main pack and masterfully scything his way through the field.

As the end of the race approached, he was back in podium contention with no sign of letting up much to the delight of the team and crowd. As the chequered flag fell, he was in second place overall and first in his class. An ecstatic greeting from Juno Racing awaited him on his return to the pits.

"It was only when the team swarmed round to congratulate me I realised our achievement. We are a winning team and really proved our mettle..."

"I couldn't quite believe it" said Dominic. "I had been so focused on the race since coming back on track two laps down I hadn't time to think about position. It was only when the team swarmed round to congratulate me I realised our achievement. We are a winning team and really proved our mettle in this race. The car was very consistent. My lap times throughout the race were within hundredths of each other bar times I was moving through traffic."

Added to his class win and second place, Dominic also took the honours for the fastest lap of the race, over half a second quicker than any other driver.

Dominic's next Britsports race will be on 9-11th September at the famous Silverstone circuit, when Dominic also hopes to be able to secure sponsorship which would enable him to compete in the Willhire 24hr race at the same event.
