A new BBC TV series
about the first world war recreates
the experiences of the men in the trenches. Based on the diaries
kept by the 10th battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, it puts
volunteers in conditions faced between 1914 and 1918.
Modern-day
volunteers from Hull and East Yorkshire, of similar ages to the
original soldiers, spent two weeks in an authentically constructed
trench system in northern France.
As
well as the terrible conditions we must also remember the camaraderie
in the trenches which comes across in the programme.
John
Robinson, one of the volunteers who took part in the programme said,
"Even though the going got tough, we found the team spirit
helped us get through two weeks in a trench".
The
Museum of Lincolnshire Life has a trench on display, just like those
from the First World War.
