Flood awareness - advice for flooding
It is important to be prepared for a flood. There are lots of steps you can take to minimise the effects of flooding around your property:
Preparation
Bullet.
Keep a list of useful telephone numbers to hand
Bullet. Have some sandbags or flood boards prepared
Bullet. Make up a flood kit
Bullet. Talk about flooding with your family
Bullet. Write a flood plan - remember your pets and your medications
Bullet. Store valuables/sentimental belongings upstairs

Flood warnings
Flood watch.
Flood Watch - Watch water levels, check the weather, ring the floodline on 0845 988 1188, alert your neighbours, get your flood action plan going, check pets, do as much as you can in the daylight - BE AWARE
Flood warning. Flood Warning - Move pets, vehicles, valuables to safety. Put sandbags or flood boards in place. Prepare to turn off gas and electricity, Be prepared to evacuate your home or business. Protect yourself, your family and others that need your help, Take action based on Family Flood Plan, Have warm clothing and wellingtons ready. Have medication to hand (if needed). Check water/food stocks. Don’t drive through floodwater. - BE READY
Flood severe. Flood Severe - Be prepared to lose power supplies – gas, electricity, water, telephone. Try to keep calm and reassure others – especially children. Co-operate with emergency services and local authorities – you may be evacuated to emergency centres. Protect family, pets and irreplaceable items. - STAY CALM
All clear. All Clear - This is issued when the flood water levels are going down and no flood watches or warnings are in force any longer. At this stage you can check it is safe to return home.

Do's and Dont's
Bullet.
Do take care when walking through shallow water - manhole covers may have come off and there may be other underwater hazards
Bullet. Do avoid contact with floodwater - it may be contaminated with sewage
Bullet. Do beware of flooding at dips in the roads, bridges and low spots - turn back if the road is flooded
Bullet. Do beware of pebbles and stones being thrown up by waves - they may hit you, your car or your home.
Bullet. Don't try to walk or drive through floodwater - six inches of fast flowing water can knock you over and two feet of water will float your car - flooding can kill
Bullet. Don't walk on sea defences, riverbanks or cross river bridges - they may collapse in extreme situations or you may be swept off by large waves
Bullet. Don't try to swim through fast flowing water - you may get swept away or struck by an object in the water
