Heroin has hit the streets of Manchester for the first time, and it’s claiming lives. CID, and DCI Gene Hunt in particular, want culprits for the smuggling, the dealing and ensuing violence, and fast. However when they’re called to the scene of a shooting of a Ugandan Asian young man, Sam has to ensure the bigoted, knee-jerk attitude of the police doesn’t condemn the new immigrant community before a fair hearing. Also Sam has his own reasons for empathising with the new immigrants, as he is haunted by messages from his Ugandan Asian girlfriend, Maya, in 2006.

As Sam tries to get to the source of the influx of this deadly drug, he finds himself intractably drawn to a beautiful young woman, who was witness to the shooting… She encourages Sam to clear the names of the bold young brothers who have come to a new world with high hopes, but the facts point to their guilt and her deceit. With Gene Hunt taking a very personal interest in cleaning dealers off the streets, Sam has to go to extraordinary lengths to prevent street justice taking its deadly toll and in the meantime confront some home truths about the unforgiving lot awaiting lonely newcomers to a hostile city…
